Theater

South Dade Senior’s High theatre department is one of the top theatre programs in Miami-Dade County. Our theatre program is a part of the International Thespian Society as, Troupe 3637.  Troupe 3637 has been an active troupe for several decades, and has qualified for The Florida State Thespian Festival (FSTF) for fifteen years in a row.  FSTF is the largest theatre competition in the country, and Troupe 3637 has received superior ratings at the festival each year and Top Honors awards, which is the highest honor you can receive at FSTF. Aside from superior ratings, Troupe 3637 has won “Best One Act Play” in the state and has represented the state of Florida at the International competition on three separate occasions over the last twelve years.  Students in our theatre program have had their plays published over the years, students have earned scholarships, acceptance into prestigious universities and some of our students are currently in the entertainment industry in NYC and LA.

Our theatre program is led by Juan P Espinosa, our theatre magnet teacher and technical director. He is a professional writer, actor, director and improviser who has produced and performed theatre across the city for many years. He has been at South Dade Senior High for twelve years, and is the longest tenured faculty member on the South Dade Visual & Performing Arts team. Mr. E has many big plans for the future of Troupe 3637, and plans on maintaining our reputation as being the best high school theatre program in Homestead, FL.  Mr. E writes an original play every year that is workshopped by students in the theatre magnet program, and that has also led to students writing many plays over the years as well. Troupe 3637 produces 3-5 theatre productions a year and most of them are original productions that get their world premiere at South Dade Senior High. Over the last twelve years, The theatre program has produced over 50 plays.

Troupe 3637 is always looking for new members to join our theatre family. We aim to accept students who are passionate about theatre and are eager to learn. We accept students that range in skill and experience, but only accept students we feel will add to our dynamic group of theatre performers, technicians and creators. We aim to put on high quality theatre that provokes thought, connects with the community and affects the audiences that see it. In order to do so, students auditioning for our theatre program must be prepared to make theatre their central extracurricular focus, putting other after school activities/sports as a 2nd tier priority.

Most of our theatre students perform and provide technical services for theatre productions, as we are in charge of all auditorium rentals that occur at South Dade, which includes theatre performances, dance recitals, promotion ceremonies, graduations, chorus shows and many other types of productions. Please look at audition requirements below. If you would like to audition for the theatre program, but would like to specialize in technical theatre and work backstage, please state that in your video audition, and tell us your experience/passion for technical theatre. We will be accepting actors and techies.
