The Autistic and Intellectual Disabilities Unit at Felix VarelaTeachers energetically plan, administer, and monitor educational services for students with autism and intellectual disabilities through individually designed instruction and community participation. Our Community-Based Instruction is direct, planned, continuous, and occurring in natural environments. These excursions into the community are not “field trips” but learning experiences. Sites are repeatedly visited in order to provide instruction for target skills because every student, regardless of the level of his or her disability, can become a member of an integrated environment participating in a variety of settings.
